Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using these drugs must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
